Hi, my name is Harry Pearson and this is my blog about my DofE EduKid volunteering. I was stuck for what to do for my volunteering as I have already started my physical and skills for a few weeks. My Mum suggested EduKid as it is fun planning an event and raising money and awareness for important projects. I’m really interested in sustainable development so this was a great way to learn more.
I started my volunteering adventure with wanting to help everyone, but obviously I had to choose one. I chose solar panels for Uganda families who are in deep poverty because I’m interested in renewable energy. I decided to raise money by doing a sponsored walk around my town because I like walking. My aim was to hit 20,000 steps and I did! In the end I did 23,745 steps (about 17.8 kilometres)! My mum and brother supported me on the walk. We also carried a solar light bulb to show how much light can be produced after being out in the sun for hours. We put it on at about 8PM and it was still on during the morning at around 7-8AM. I raised £120, which helps three families to get solar panels. This helps children to study in the evenings once it is dark, which makes them able get a better job in the future.
This was a great experience. I learnt a lot about the challenges that children face in other parts of the world. I also learnt that raising money for charity can be fun. I would definitely do more to support the things EduKid are supporting in the future!

Great work Harry! The power walk was a great idea to raise awareness of the challenges young people face without access to electricity at home. The money you have raised will make a huge difference to the families we support and we are so pleased that you enjoyed the experience too! Thank you for all of your efforts!
