How I started with Edukid

I never knew that signing up for my year 11 school trip would lead me to where I am today. I could always remember Edukids annual updates about our school supporting Sen Sok village in Cambodia. Every spring term we would do a huge colour run to raise money for students. The money made from the sponsored colour run would give students school packs and educational support. When I was offered the opportunity to visit Sen Sok on a trip with Edukid, I knew I had to go. On the lead up to the trip I was so excited and also nervous this would be the first time I’ve ever been so far away from home on my own doing something so new in such a different environment. I had no idea what to expect.

After spending time with the children, teachers and parents from Sen Sok village school I felt like I never wanted to leave or say goodbye. I did not anticipate that I would learn so much about myself through helping others. Each name would be individually called, and the student would come to collect their long-awaited school pack, every single time I got to pass that package onto a student the feeling was so fulfilling and pure. Making people smile made me smile.

Accessing education meant a great deal to these children, they were so eager to learn it encouraged me to make the most of the opportunity I have at home with access to the classroom, learning support and supplies. These children were surrounded by so little and had ambitions to do so much, there strength and determination was inspirational.

Knowing that I had made even just a slight impact with participating in our school fundraisers could only make me want to be part of the projects more. I was unsure of what direction I was heading in once I finished school. Once I had visited Edukids project I knew I wanted to be part of this life changing organisation. So, I applied for an apprenticeship. I now have the greatest pleasure of giving children in the UK the same opportunity I had to help others and discover the projects Edukid run.

I never imagined that when I was first enrolled into Edukids global citizenship programme in year 7 that 5 years later I would be the one teaching that same program!  I visit the projects Edukid has and run zoom calls connecting friendships globally.

Every day I learn something new whether it be in the office, presenting an assembly or on a trip to our program’s. Edukid thrives on constantly instilling ambition and kindness across all sectors of work, ultimately helping children to achieve their dreams, and find your courage outside of your comfort zone, igniting passion for change!
