Ruth works for edukid's partner organisation in Cambodia (Care for Cambodia). She has opened her home for the children in her village to come and receive extra lessons (school in Cambodia is only part time) as well as health care advice and games.
For a long time Ruth lived and worked in Phnom Penh but when her mother became ill she returned to her home village to care for her. At first they were living in a tiny shack made of banana leaf panels at the edge of the village. She says it was leaning badly to one side and when it rained everything got wet. Also, as it was the last house in the village she and her mother were scared of thieves and bandits coming out of the forest. Even in this home Ruth wanted to help the children in her village. She had no money but would go around and cut peoples hair or do odd jobs to get money. Then she would buy cakes to encourage the children to come and get some extra schooling. The children came and sat on the mat outside Ruth's shack and she helped them with their reading and writing and maths.
Today Ruth has a new home (with thanks from a generous friend in America who visited Ruth and wanted to help her). On the day that we visited Ruth's home there were 3 lessons going on with the elder children now helping and teaching the younger ones! 2 lessons were taking place under her house while a group of older girls sat outside on mats by the hay stacks.
Ruth plays a valuable role for edukid registering the children that we help and keeping track of who is in school. It is only thanks to wonderful hearted people like Ruth and others at CFC that edukid can do what it does to help the children of Cambodia.
